Swine flu cured by chess in Lviv!
There is a good tradition in Lviv to hold round robin tournaments with GM and WGM norm to memorize sport’s official Mykhailo Vasylyshyn. That’s not actually a problem to gather participants in the city with so many title holders. This year one of my students GM Yuri Vovk helped me much in organization, he formed the participant list of man tournament.
Winner of famous open tournament Cappelle la Grande 2009 Yuri Vovk got first experience in organization of tournament.
Main difficulty is to find foreign players of course, but few weeks before the start we faced unexpected obstacle: swine flu pandemic in Western Ukraine. The situation was a bit exaggerated by media. So only the most brave chess friends didn’t fear to accept our invitations. Coming ahead I may say that all players left tournament alive and healthy
This time the tournament took place in Lviv Palace of Art, which is in the very heart of our ancient city. So the fight started... Top rating holders in woman tournament were Woman International Masters Hryhorenko and Chulivska, who also were main candidates for WGM norm. But perhaps nervousness and extra tension in play didn’t allow them to achieve the goal.
Hryhorenko Nataliya rating favorite of woman tournament.
Woman grandmasters were more relaxed and accordingly won 1st, 2nd and 4th place. First prize went to Hrabinska Myroslava. Having sign piece with 2 other Grandmasters and Hryhorenko she won all other games, “cut off the tail” as players say.
Winner of female tournament Hrabinska Myroslava ahead of Palace of Arts (right) where tournament was held. To the left one can see Potocki Palace, where Topalov- Kamsky match was planned to be held. This match later took place in Sofia.
Chess games of friends WGM Katerina Matseyko and WIM Vita Chulivska seldom end in peacefully.

Man tournament was luckier on norm gains. 3 players left Lviv in exciting mood. Onischuk and Erdogdu scored 6,5 points out of 9 and won the highest title norm. Turkish player made great deed having won 4 last games!
Turkish Master Mert Erdogdu had experience of playing in Lviv tournaments already. But achieved his goal only from second attempt.
Onischuk got his cup for 2nd place in tournament from Ivanchuk’s hands, who visited closing ceremony. Erdogdu and Onischuk shared first place with experienced Russian grandmaster Yevseev, who became the winner by coefficient.
